As part of our commitment to advancing the circular economy and empowering the next generation, Indorama Ventures launched “Hack the Island”, a youth innovation camp focused on tackling plastic waste challenges in island communities through social innovation.
Over a two-month journey, more than 130 changemakers from across Thailand came together to develop practical solutions for local waste management, with an emphasis on recycling and PET bottle recovery.
Supported by mentors from Koh Tao, the Koh Tao Tourism Association, and education specialists, participants gained critical thinking, leadership, and hands-on skills. They learned about PET and recycling and were inspired to design creative, scalable solutions to protect marine and island ecosystems from plastic pollution.
A key highlight was when the winning team presented their project to the Mayor of Koh Tao, local businesses, and community leaders – receiving valuable feedback and opening the door to real-world implementation. Their idea is now being considered for real implementation on Koh Tao - proving that youth-led innovation can drive lasting change.
By planting seeds of circular thinking, we’re not just inspiring youth—we are empowering them to lead the change.
Winning idea: Eco-Island App by Aqua Shield
Team Aqua Shield, a group of 18-year-old students from RMUTT Innovation Demonstration School stood out with Eco-Island—a smart, interactive app that makes environmental action both easy and rewarding.
The app features a smart trash map showing the nearest recycling bins. Users earn eco-points by dropping off recyclables, which can be redeemed for discounts at local hotels, restaurants, and attractions. Eco-Island also promotes events like clean-up races, highlights eco-tourism landmarks, and encourages lasting behavior change through waste separation tips, leveling-up rewards, and user rankings to keep people engaged.
It’s a smart blend of technology, education, and incentives—designed to make recycling easy, fun, and rewarding.
